Chapter Seven: Wild Blizzard

Gunnar woke up late Saturday morning. Maeve was beside him, looking so cute as she slept. Her coppery curls were piled up around her perfect face. Gunnar leaned in, giving her a kiss. She was his fiancee now.

We're getting married.

His heart beat faster just thinking about it. He would be with his fiery lover for the rest of their lives. They would share so much joy, comforting each other in times of grief, strengthening each other in times of adversity. He would celebrate each day with her.

Maeve shifted, a smile growing on her lips. “Umm, I thought after last night I had worn you out,” she purred.

Gunnar laughed. She had been passionate when they returned home. They made love for hours until Gunnar couldn't take any more sex. She had been even more insatiable than usual. “I'm not sure I have recovered,” Gunnar grinned. “But I'm willing to try.”

And then he glanced at the clock and groaned.

“What?”

“Work,” he said. “I picked up a double shift today. I need some extra money.”

She nodded, then took a deep breath. “Gunnar,” she said. “There's something I need to tell you.”

“Huh?” he asked, rolling out of bed and finding a pair of sweats to pull on.

“I'm...different from other girls.”

Gunnar laughed. “Oh, I know that. And I love you for it.”

A smile crossed her lips, then vanished. “That's not what I meant. There's...”

“Yeah?”

She swallowed. “Well, I'm not...American.”

“I thought so? Your accent's a little strange, and you have some weird gaps in your vocabulary. Where are you from? Not Ireland, right?”

“Well, I'm from Summer.”

“Where's that?”

“Seelie,” she answered. “It's, um...far away.”

“Never heard of it, but it's a pretty name.” He dug into his dresser and found some clean clothes. “I need to shower Maeve. Maybe one day you'll take me to Summer. I'd love to see it.”

She nodded her head.

“You okay, Maeve?”

“Uh-huh,” she said, lying back. “I do love you, Gunnar.”

“I know. You prove it every day.”

Maeve smiled and Gunnar disappeared into the bathroom to shower. He had a long, sixteen hours ahead of him at work. And the weather didn't sound promising. But it was a small price to pay to buy Maeve the engagement ring.

Maeve groaned, falling back on the bed. “Why can't I tell him?” she demanded of herself.

The fear weighed at her tongue, filling her mouth with taffy, keeping her from blurting out the truth and ruining everything. We're happy. Why does he need to know?

Because he's in danger.

But he'll be mad. He thinks I told him the truth.

He'll understand.

He doesn't believe in magic of Faerie.

I'll convince him. I'll show him a spell.

He'll hate you. Mortals always hate magic.

Gunnar will never hate me.

Maeve let out a frustrated growl.

She spent the day trying to work up the courage to tell Gunnar. She wrote out a letter, spelling out everything, then crumpled it and threw it in the trash only to find a fresh piece and start over. After she had filled the wastepaper basket next to Gunnar's desk full of crumpled balls, she tried a new tactic.
